When does the NFL 2024 training camp start?

The 2023 NFL season came to a close after the Kansas City Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl. With the start of the NFL Draft action, the teams are gearing up for another eventful offseason. They will do their best to dethrone Kansas City, which has led the league for two years, while the champions will strive to retain their title and accomplish a three-peat this year.

Throughout the next several months, teams will adjust their rosters, coaching staffs, and play styles to prepare for the new season.

  • May 2: Deadline for teams to pick up fifth-year option for 2021 first-round draft picks. Former first-round picks from the 2021 NFL Draft must have their fifth-year option picked up by May 2. If their option is not picked up, their contract will not extend one more year.
  • May 3-6 or May 10-13: Three-day rookie minicamp. Teams will hold a three-day camp for rookies on the two weekends following the NFL Draft. Each team can only have one minicamp.

NFL Pre-Season

Each NFL team’s training camp start date is determined by when their preseason begins. The first preseason game is the Hall of Fame Game, but the two teams that will play in it have not been announced yet. In 2023, the game was played on August 3rd. Once the two teams have played in the Hall of Fame Game, the rest of the NFL will likely start their preseason 10 days later.

Veterans are not allowed to report to training camp any earlier than 15 days before their team’s first preseason game. Rookies, on the other hand, can report one week before veteran players.
