By Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting is set to play a key role in the sport’s “rise” in the United States after he was announced as the new head coach of Major League Cricket side Washington Freedom.
Ponting inked a two-year deal with the franchise, replacing fellow Aussie Greg Shipperd in the head coaching position as the latter returns home to focus on domestic cricket in New South Wales.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining the Washington Freedom in 2024,” Ponting said in a statement.
“Cricket is really on the rise in the US and I’m looking forward to being involved in Major League Cricket.
“I’ve been impressed by everyone involved at Washington Freedom and, while it’s a bit surreal to be replacing my mate Greg Shipperd, there’s probably no one better to set up a successful franchise.
“I’m ready to build on his work as we look towards the coming season.”
Ponting’s appointment marks his third full time head coaching role after a two-year stint with the Mumbai Indians before linking up with the Delhi Capitals in 2018, where he remains in the position.
The Aussie great takes over a Freedom squad which includes the likes of fellow countrymen Ben Dwarshius, Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques as well as towering South African all-rounder Marco Jansen.

Australian Test opener Steve Smith has also long been linked with the Freedom too.
Franchise owner Sanjay Govil was elated with securing Ponting’s signature and felt his “unmatched stature and expertise” will prove vital in elevating the sport’s profile in the US.
