LONDON — India dominated the 2023 Cricket World Cup by winning all its games until the final, when Australia silenced over 100,000 fans on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to lift the trophy. That may not have been in the script for Indian supporters and administrators, but the country’s continuing dominance of the sport seems guaranteed no matter what happens on the pitch.
The nation of 1.4 billion people is widely reported to account for around 80% of cricket’s revenues, and is home to one of the world’s most lucrative domestic competitions. The Indian Premier League (IPL) last year sold its media rights for 2023-27 for $6.2 billion. England and Australia, the other two members of the “big three” of the International Cricket Council (ICC), can’t compete financially.
