49ers called top option for ex-Broncos superstar surprisingly available | Sporting News

The San Francisco 49ers widely are considered one of the top teams in the National Football League but that doesn’t mean it can’t get better in the near future.

San Francisco has plenty of cap space available and could look to add in free agency before training camp rolls around.

The 49ers already are in a good spot — although they need to figure out what they are going to do with receiver Brandon Aiyuk — and could look to add. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder even called San Francisco the top landing spot for former Denver Broncos superstar safety Justin Simmons.

“It’s kind of surprising that Justin Simmons is still available,” Holder said. “The Denver Broncos were up against the cap to begin the offseason so he was let go primarily because of his large contract which won’t be an issue at this stage in the game. Also, the eight-year veteran doesn’t have a long injury history and was productive last season…

“Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers are projected to start Talanoa Hufanga and Ji’Ayir Brown at safety. Hufanga is coming off a torn ACL and while Brown played well as a rookie, it couldn’t hurt to add another veteran in the mix during training camp to serve as another starting option.”

Simmons is one of the best safeties in football and likely could be signed for far less than he deserves at this point in the offseason. He has been an All-Pro in four of the last five seasons and certainly could go a long way in improving the 49ers.

It’s surprising that he still is available and the 49ers should act quickly to get a deal done.
